Before I dive into this month's topic, let me say another big word of thanks regarding our recent Sales Promotion. Job well done! 2008 continues to be an increasing strong year for remote deposit capture.
Last time, I discussed the functionality to manually enter additional data fields to complement check information captured at the point of scan. In turn, all the check information can be provided back to your clients in the form of a posting file, which may be interfaced into other applications. Keep in mind, that the additional data entered may come from the check or it could originate from an associated remittance coupon.
This month, I'd like to discuss Courtesy Amount Recognition (CAR), Legal Amount Recognition (LAR), and your scanner's read rate. CAR is the numerical amount on the check (ex: $100.00), and LAR is the hand-written amount on the check (ex: One hundred dollars and 00/100).
As you probably know, Remote Deposit Capture displays scan exceptions in pink, and the user must correct those exceptions. Typically, due to the difficulty of comprehending human handwriting, most exceptions are with the check amount. The MICR portion of the check is much easier to interpret. On average, your clients should experience at least a 70% successful CAR/LAR read rate.
Up to two tests are performed to determine if the check amount is an exception. First, the CAR is read, and the application must be at least 50% confident in the check amount value. If the confidence is less that 50%, then the LAR is read to help boost the overall confidence above the 50% threshold. If the confidence still does not exceed 50%, then the amount is flagged as a pink exception.
Depending on the number of checks in your deposit, correcting check amount exceptions can be rather time consuming. In the following attachment is a tip to help you fly past those check exceptions, and submit your deposit as quickly as possible.
